Is each piece of art really unique? Absolutely! Although the images will be as shown on our website each piece is individually drawn, burned, and painted on real hardwood or hardwood burl. This ensures that each piece is absolutely distinct. What is the difference between a burl and a wood slab? A wood slab is cut, on a slight angle, from the trunk or branch of a tree and displays uniform tree rings. A burl is an irregular growth on the trunk of a tree usually caused by a disease or injury to a tree when it was young. The burl has no regular shape or rings. Why do you charge more for burls? As you might expect burls are often hard to find. It is this relative scarcity that makes them more valuable. Why is there sometimes a significant price increase for a larger variation, even though the image is the same? Even though the image is the same a lot more detail is required to produce a larger image. We want to ensure that our larger variations give you the same high quality detail as you see in smaller images. Where does your wood come from? Much of our wood, particularly the burls, are hand cut by Angus Burns...afterall, he was once a lumberjack. Is there much work involved in finishing the wood? The answer to that is a definate yes! The wood slabs or cut burls are kiln dried, planed, and finally sanded to a completely smooth finish. The volumes that we work with keep our per unit cost manageable. Can I request a specific species of wood for my painting? Yes you can; we have access to many suppliers of rare and unique species of wood. Simply fill out the RFQ form and send us your request. We will prepare a proposal and send it back to you for your consideration. Does Angus really produce each piece of art himself? Each piece of art is individually hand crafted by either Angus Burns or his partner (both in art and in life) Sarah Spencer. What if I don't like my piece when I receive it? Although it rarely happens we do understand that sometimes the finished product may not be exactly what you had envisioned. Therefore we make this offer:
How durable is the finish on table-tops and coffee tables? We use a high quality, non-yellowing, epoxy-like coating that provides a finish that is as hard as glass. It can be easily cleaned with glass cleaner and a non scratch cloth. Care for it like you would any other piece of fine furniture and it will last a lifetime, and longer. Will the finish on your paintings "yellow"? We use a high quality spray finish that is available in high gloss, satin, or matte finishes. This protective coating has not been known to yellow under normal household conditions. Can I order an image of a bird or animal that is not shown on your website? Yes you can. Simply fill out the RFQ form shown in the custom art section and we will quote you a price. Depending on the size and complexity it may not cost you any more than artwork of similar size and style shown on the site. Do you really use real moose antlers? Absolutely! You can be assured that your moose antler carving is made from 100% real moose antler. Where do you get so many moose antlers? Most of our moose antlers are "sheds". As you know moose shed their antlers in the late winter or early spring and grow a new set each year. Most of our antlers are collected from the forests of Ontario or Newfoundland, where there are high populations of moose. Why are moose antler carvings so expensive? Moose antler carving is a very labour intensive process. After sketching out the basic design, Angus makes the rough cuts to get the general shape and then it is literally a time consuming artistic process that ends with a very unique and valuable piece of art. Can I supply my own moose rack for carving? Yes you can! Every year we are approached by many hunters that want to turn their trophy moose rack into a work of art. Simply fill out the quotation request and we will provide a proposal to accomodate your specific desires.
